Veterinary Compounding

We have particular expertise compounding medications for veterinary patients. With a master's degree in animal science, pharmacist Rick Pauley understands the needs of the animal health professional. We welcome the opportunity to work with veterinarians to customize medications for the unique needs of the animals in their care. We have experience preparing compounded medications for:

  • Avian
  • Companion animals including cats, dogs, ferrets, snakes, and rabbits
  • Equine including pleasure and racing
  • Zoo animals including turtles, giraffes, tigers, wallabies, gorillas and elephants

Dosage Forms

Animals have a heightened sensitivity to the taste and smell of drugs, and we understand the importance of a medication's appearance, texture, consistency, and taste in the treatment of animals. We prepare prescription medications in a wide range of dosage forms, allowing us to formulate medications best-suited to each individual animal. These include:

  • Capsules -- available in immediate or sustained release (drug released over a period of time), which can be prepared in the capsule size or drug concentration that best fits the size of animal.
  • Chewable treats -- individually-packaged medication-containing "treats" flavored for companion animals to mask unpleasant tastes.
  • Creams/ointments/transdermals -- a variety of medications may be absorbed through the skin. Specially-designed bases pull the drug through the skin and into soft tissue or the circulatory system. An ointment mill reduces particle size, which enhances absorption and eliminates grittiness.
  • Injectables -- sterile injections when an immediate effect is necessary.
  • Solutions/Suspensions -- liquids used to ease swallowing of medications and increase compliance. Prepared with press-in bottle tops that allow oral syringes to fit tightly, eliminating spillage, yet allowing safety caps to fit.
  • Suppositories (vaginal or rectal) -- available in various sizes to accommodate drug quantities or melting requirements.
  • Topical sprays -- applied directly to affected areas through spray bottles.
